Understanding GSM Fabric Weight for Athletic Apparel

When browsing custom athletic apparel, you will constantly encounter the acronym GSM. Understanding what GSM means and how it affects the performance of a garment is critical to ordering the right uniforms for your sport.

What is GSM?

GSM stands for Grams per Square Meter. It is the metric measurement of the weight of a fabric. If you cut a one-meter by one-meter square of fabric and weighed it on a scale, that weight in grams is its GSM.

Low GSM (100–140): Very lightweight, sheer, and highly breathable.
Medium GSM (150–190): The sweet spot for most athletic jerseys. Balances durability with breathability.
High GSM (200–300+): Heavy, warm, and highly durable. Used for contact sports and outerwear.

Selecting the Right GSM by Sport

Different sports require vastly different structural integrities from their uniforms. Here is how we spec our fabrics at The Thread Yard:

Soccer and Track (130 - 150 GSM)

Endurance sports require maximum heat dissipation and zero restriction. We use lightweight micro-mesh polyesters (around 140 GSM) that wick moisture instantly and feel like a second skin.

Basketball and Baseball (150 - 175 GSM)

These sports require a balance. Basketball jerseys need durability for physical play under the rim, while baseball jerseys need structural integrity to hold full buttons and withstand sliding. We utilize 160-175 GSM performance twill and interlock fabrics.

Hockey and Rugby (220 - 280 GSM)

Contact sports require heavy-duty armor. Hockey jerseys are exposed to sharp skates, sticks, and the boards. We use ultra-durable, heavyweight pro-knit polyesters ranging from 220 to 280 GSM, often with reinforced shoulders and elbows.

Does a higher GSM mean higher quality?

No. A common misconception is that heavier fabric is inherently "better" or more premium.

A 300 GSM hoodie is fantastic for winter streetwear, but a 300 GSM soccer jersey would trap heat and exhaust a player within 10 minutes. Quality is determined by the yarn construction, the knitting process, and the moisture-wicking treatments applied to the fabric—not just its weight.
